Trump, Who Brags About His ‘Stamina,’ Is Ducking Interviews Because He's 'Exhausted'

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - OCTOBER 17: Republican presidential nominee, former U.S. President Donald Trump, and his wife Melania Trump talk during the annual Alfred E. Smith Foundation Dinner at the New York Hilton Midtown on October 17, 2024 in New York City. Trump is scheduled to speak with comedian Jim Gaffigan as the Master of Ceremonies at the 79th Annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner. The dinner, a white-tie charity event that benefits Catholic charities, is known for political figures poking fun at one another. The foundation honors the late Alfred E. “Trump's team has used exhaustion as an excuse for canceling interviews down the home stretch of the campaign, Politico reports

has long claimed no one has ever been more physically and mentally equipped to be president than him. In particular, Trump, who is now 78 years old, has bragged about his “stamina” — how he has it, and how his opponents don’t. In one example from just a few days ago, he that Vice President Kamala Harris needs to “pass a test on Cognitive Stamina and Agility” because her “actions have led many to believe that there could be something very wrong with her.”

It’s Trump, however, whose public appearances have been increasingly incoherent as the race has intensified in the home stretch before Election Day. The former president has also canceled several interviews and public appearances, including , , a speaking slot at , and, most notably, . Trump has also Harris a second time after by the vice president in September.

Politico on Friday that Trump’s team told The Shade Room — a podcast popular with young, Black listeners that the campaign had been talking to for weeks about setting up an interview before backing out — that Trump was “exhausted and refusing [some] interviews but that could change.”

Politico adds that the campaign offered up Trump-loving rapper Waka Flocka Flame as a replacement.

Trump spokesperson Karoline Leavitt denied the report in typical fashion. “President Trump is running laps around Kamala Harris on the campaign trail,” Leavitt said in a statement to Politico. “And has done media interviews every day this week. He has more energy and a harder work ethic than anyone in politics.”

Trump is indeed still doing interviews and maintaining a busy schedule, but he’s showing signs of mental wear and tear that aren’t evident in Harris. He routinely gives to questions about his plans for the nation, while frequently flubbing his words and getting basic facts wrong (earlier this week he told supporters to make sure to ). At a town hall in Pennsylvania, Trump only answered a few questions before to the crowd as he swayed onstage for nearly an hour.

“Let’s not do any more questions,” Trump said. “Let’s just listen to music.”

Shortly after Politico published its report on Friday, CNN’s Brian Stelter notedthat the window for Trump to accept CNN’s offer to host back-to-back town-hall events with the two candidates on Oct. 23 had officially closed. “His campaign has not committed to participate, so we are moving forward with a Town Hall event with VP Harris taking questions from a live audience of Pennsylvania voters who are still undecided or persuadable in this election,” CNN wrote in a statement.

“Donald Trump’s low-energy approach in the final weeks continues,” Brian Fallon of the Harris campaign wrote on X in response.“
