"Everyone should have known what was really in John Kelly’s heart when Trump gleefully chose him as his Chief of Staff. As with many of yesteryear’s racist political stormtroopers, Kelly’s done a good job of remaining hidden in the closet... but that can only ever last for so long before something slips or in the Trump administration one is pressured to tiptoe out. So not only was Kelly lying about the Congresswoman (and there’s now video to prove he was lying), he was also using a racist term to energize Trump’s base of support.
This is what Kelly said:
And a congresswoman stood up, and , stood up there in all of that and talked about how she was instrumental in getting the funding for that building...in a long tradition of empty barrels making the most noise
The term in different forms goes back to Plato and Shakespeare, but in its modern form has for a long time been appropriated by white racists to complain about “noisy” black people.
"That's a racist term," Wilson told CNN on Friday morning, one day after Kelly used the term to defend President Donald Trump against charges of insensitivity toward the families of fallen soldiers. "We looked it up in the dictionary because I had never heard of an empty barrel. And I don't like to be dragged into something like that."

John Kelly grew up in the largely segregated community of Boston where such terms are unfortunately common. The phrase Kelly used is a way of playing on the racist stereotype of black people being too noisy in public and lazy and/or irresponsible (empty) in their own lives and complaining about things when there’s really nothing to complain about (racism, lack of economic opportunity, etc).
Kelly is a clever racist. Afterall, the Congresswoman had to look up the phrase to understand the true racist meaning behind what he was saying.
Kelly may be an old-school racist in the mold of George W. Bush and so-called “establishment” Republicans in Congress, but that doesn’t mean he should get a pass just because that brand of racism is now normalized compared to Trump’s neonazi escallation. Kelly is after all Trump’s man, Trump’s choice. Ask yourself why. Kelly says he now gladly works for an administration that is and was clearly populated by white supremacists. Ask yourself why.
If you’ve convinced yourself it’s because he’s trying to protect us from Trump, then you’re desperate for hope, desperate for a savior. And I get it. But you’re also naive, which our democracy can’t afford.
John Kelly must resign for his lies about Congresswoman Wilson. He also owes every black person in America (and especially the family of Sgt. La David Johnson) an apology for his racist attack and his sociopathic reaction to the Congresswoman and the mother of Sgt. Johnson..."
John Kelly Used Racist Term To Lie About Congresswoman Wilson. We Should Have Known What Kelly Is.
