It is more about the intersection of caste and class. Liberals make the mistake of thinking that working class whites are voting against their economic interest when they vote for a Reagan or Trump. . These liberals and others on the left are stuck in an outdated Marxist based analysis. Though useful this type of analysis does not take other motivations besides economic into consideration. These workers are choosing class status over economic class. They are more concerned with having Black and Brown people to look down upon than they are concerned about the wealthy taking the bulk of the economic wealth they help produce. In America caste has always trumped economic class and I see no reason to believe it will change after nearly 400 years. This system was class/caste manipulation of poor whites began after Bacon's Rebellion in the 1670s and continues with Trump's racist anti Hispanic, Muslim and Black attacks today. His misogyny is a living, breathing walking and talking example of "Mad Men" a perfect description of Trump.
